The Shadow (GL-AR300M16) packs reliable wireless connectivity into a case the size of a drinks coaster. At 58 x 58 x 25 mm and 40 g, it is built for small businesses, home use and travel — a lightweight router that keeps you connected in a variety of environments, with a choice of internal or external antenna versions.
Security comes first: alongside a strong firewall it supports OpenVPN (up to 15 Mbps), WireGuard (up to 50 Mbps) and DNS server configuration, with over 30 VPN service providers to choose from. Configure it as a VPN server and you can access your files privately as if you were on your home network.
It gets online four ways — Ethernet, wireless repeater, USB modem or phone tethering — and Cloudflare DNS over TLS encrypts your DNS queries against eavesdropping and man-in-the-middle attacks. OpenWrt-ready with a QCA9531 SoC, 128 MB of RAM, plus PCIe and UART for DIY projects, it draws under 2 W from a Micro USB supply.

Internal or external antenna — which should I pick?
Both are the same router (grey case, 16 MB NOR flash). The Ext version adds external antennas for stronger wireless reach; the internal version is the tidiest travel option. There is only a small price difference.
Can it protect me on hotel Wi-Fi?
Yes — connect it to the hotel network by Ethernet or repeater mode and every device behind the Shadow rides its firewall, VPN and encrypted DNS.
How fast is the VPN?
Up to 50 Mbps over WireGuard and 15 Mbps over OpenVPN in client mode (local network tests; server mode is slower).
What powers it?
A Micro USB port at 5V/2A — a laptop or USB adapter will run it, drawing under 2 W.
Can I tinker with it?
Yes — it is OpenWrt-ready with PCIe, UART and GPIO control exposed for DIY hardware projects.
