Grandstream HT818 8-Port FXS Gateway with Gigabit NAT Router

The Grandstream HT818 is the largest of the desktop analogue gateways: eight FXS ports in a small fanless box with a two-port Gigabit router built in. It is the sensible stopping point before a rack-mounted GXW — enough capacity for a small hotel, a surgery or a floor of a factory, without a comms room.

Up to four SIP profiles means the eight ports do not have to belong to one provider or one system. A group of extensions on the office PBX, a fax on a separate carrier and an alarm line somewhere else can all live on the same box.

Each port is an ordinary analogue line as far as the device plugged into it is concerned — dial tone, ring current, the lot.

Frequently asked questions

Will my existing analogue phones just work?

Yes. An FXS port supplies line voltage, dial tone and ring current exactly as an analogue exchange line does, so the handsets behave normally.

Do fax machines actually work over this?

It supports T.38 fax relay, which carries the fax as data instead of pushing fax tones through a voice codec, and falls back to G.711 if T.38 is unavailable. Your provider or PBX also needs to support T.38.

HT818 or a GXW4216?

Port count and where it lives. Eight devices and no rack — the HT818, silent and desktop sized. Sixteen or more devices, or a comms room and a punch-down block — the GXW.

Can different ports use different providers?

Yes, up to four SIP profiles. Ports can be grouped so a fax sits on one carrier while the extensions sit on the office PBX.

Does it need to be my router?

No. The NAT router is there if you want it inline at a small site, but it works perfectly well plugged into an existing network as an ordinary device.

How many ports do I actually need?

One per analogue device, not per user. Count the handsets, fax machines, lift phones, door entry panels and alarm diallers — buildings routinely have more than the plan says.
