The GL.iNet Beryl AX (GL-MT3000) is a pocket-sized Wi-Fi 6 travel router: AX3000 wireless (574 Mbps on 2.4GHz + 2402 Mbps on 5GHz), a 2.5G multi-gigabit WAN port and hardware that runs a full VPN properly — WireGuard at up to 300 Mbps, OpenVPN at up to 150 Mbps.

It exists for working on networks you do not control. In a hotel, a rented office or on public Wi-Fi, the Beryl AX sits between your devices and the venue's network: everything you own connects to your own trusted Wi-Fi, and the router carries it all through an encrypted VPN tunnel. OpenVPN and WireGuard come pre-installed with support for 30+ VPN providers, and it can host its own VPN server so you can reach home or office securely from anywhere.

It runs open-source OpenWrt 21.02 with over 5,000 ready-made plug-ins, and ships with AdGuard Home for network-wide ad and tracker blocking. Up to 70 devices can connect at once.

Because the VPN is the point. Many small routers advertise fast Wi-Fi but manage only 20–30 Mbps once encryption is on, and everything you do abroad runs at that speed. The Beryl AX moves WireGuard at up to 300 Mbps — faster than most hotel connections you will plug it into.

WireGuard or OpenVPN?

Use WireGuard where your VPN provider offers it — it is roughly twice as fast on this hardware (300 vs 150 Mbps). OpenVPN remains for services that require it.
