The Slate 7 is GL.iNet's first dual-band Wi-Fi 7 travel router — a compact box that turns any hotel connection into your own fast, private network. Wi-Fi 7 delivers up to 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 2,882 Mbps on 5 GHz, with MLO, refined OFDMA, 4K QAM and preamble puncture keeping latency low even in crowded environments, and dual 2.5G Ethernet ports (WAN + LAN) covering the wired side.

The interactive touchscreen is the party trick: scan a QR code to join Wi-Fi, watch real-time speeds, toggle the VPN on and off and switch between providers right on the display, with colour-coded status for Ethernet, tethering, repeater and cellular modes. Over 30 VPN services are supported, with OpenVPN-DCO up to 385 Mbps and WireGuard up to 490 Mbps, as client or server.

It runs OpenWrt 23.05 with 1 GB DDR4 and 512 MB NAND flash, supports 120+ simultaneous devices, and takes USB-C PD power (5V/3A, 9V/3A, 12V/2.5A) with a lightweight adapter — all in a 130 x 91 x 34 mm body, from UK stock with support from CLI Secure.

How fast is the VPN?

Up to 490 Mbps over WireGuard and 385 Mbps over OpenVPN-DCO in client mode on a local network. If you need more VPN headroom, the Slate 7 Pro roughly doubles those figures; for most hotel connections the Slate 7 has ample margin.

Can I use it to reach my home or office network?

Yes. It comes pre-installed with OpenVPN and WireGuard and can run as a VPN client or server, so remote workers can securely reach internal networks, files and printers from anywhere while keeping control of their network IP address.

Does it work with hotel captive portals?

Yes — captive portal handling lets you log in once and share the connection with all your devices, and repeater mode extends the hotel signal either wirelessly or via cable.

What powers it?
