The Fortinet FortiWiFi 50G is the wireless-equipped sibling of the FortiGate 50G, combining a next-generation firewall, integrated SD-WAN and built-in dual-radio Wi-Fi in a single desktop appliance for distributed enterprise sites. It delivers 5 Gbps firewall throughput, 2.25 Gbps IPS throughput and 1.1 Gbps threat protection throughput across 5x GE RJ45 ports (4x internal, 1x WAN).

FortiGuard AI-Powered Security Services run natively on the appliance as part of Fortinet’s Security Fabric, drawing on the latest threat intelligence from FortiGuard Labs to defend against zero-day and AI-driven attack techniques. Network and file security draw on more than 18,000 IPS signatures with AI/ML-driven packet and SSL inspection and virtual patching for newly disclosed vulnerabilities, while anti-malware combines antivirus with sandboxing and application control gives real-time visibility of the apps on the network.

Web and DNS security defends against DNS-based attacks, malicious URLs, botnets and DDoS threats: FortiGuard Labs blocks more than 500 million malicious URLs weekly and around 32,000 botnet attempts per minute. The 50G supports 4.5 Gbps IPsec VPN throughput, up to 200 gateway-to-gateway and 250 client-to-gateway IPsec tunnels, and manages up to 16 FortiAPs and 8 FortiSwitches.

Hardware only is the appliance with no FortiGuard subscription; the bundles add FortiCare Premium support plus a FortiGuard security services subscription (Unified Threat Protection or Enterprise Protection) for 1, 3 or 5 years.

What distinguishes the 50G from the 51G, 50G-SFP and 50G-DSL?

The 51G is the same platform with 64 GB of onboard storage; the 50G has no local storage. The 50G-SFP swaps one RJ45 port for a hardware-accelerated GE SFP slot for fibre WAN; the 50G-DSL replaces the standard WAN port with an integrated xDSL modem for copper broadband. All variants in this family include the same built-in Wi-Fi.

Is the 50G the right size?

With 1.1 Gbps threat protection throughput and 720,000 concurrent sessions, the 50G sits above the 30G/31G models for sites with higher WAN loads. If none of the connectivity variants (storage, SFP, DSL) apply, the base 50G with its 5x GE RJ45 ports and built-in Wi-Fi is the standard choice.
