GL.iNet GL-S200 Dual-Protocol Thread Border Router

GL-S200 is a Thread Border Router for hosting and managing low-power, reliable IoT mesh networks. It runs Thread and BLE 5.0 simultaneously: Thread excels in high-density networks while avoiding congestion, and BLE connects devices at greater distances — giving you the flexibility to bring a wide range of devices into one network, with BLE to MQTT support for cloud connectivity. An optional pre-configured Thread development board (UART, SPI and I2C integration) simplifies adding Thread to your own IoT end devices.

Under the hood it runs GL.iNet firmware based on OpenWrt 21.02 (kernel 5.4) with access to OpenWrt's 5,000+ open-source plug-ins, and the admin panel includes a user-friendly topology interface for managing complex IoT networks. Thread networks are secured with AES encryption and phone authentication; the router itself supports DNS over TLS, DNS over HTTPS, and pre-installed OpenVPN and WireGuard® with 30+ VPN services. GoodCloud provides remote access, batch management and device analytics.

What does a Thread border router do?

It hosts a low-power Thread mesh and bridges it to your LAN and the internet. GL-S200 supports both device-to-device and device-to-cloud connectivity, and lets you deploy multiple border routers at once to cut latency — IoT devices automatically seek the router with the lowest-latency path to external networks.

Why does dual-protocol (Thread + BLE) matter?

Thread is optimal in high-density networks while avoiding congestion; BLE reaches devices at greater distances. Running both at once means one gateway covers a much wider range of smart home and IoT devices, with BLE data forwarded to the cloud via MQTT.

How is the network secured?

All Thread networks on GL-S200 use AES encryption plus phone authentication for multi-layered access control. The gateway also supports DNS over TLS / DNS over HTTPS, and its pre-installed OpenVPN and WireGuard encrypt traffic for connected devices that cannot run a VPN themselves.
