When do I need a media converter?

Whenever a network link has to travel further than copper allows, cross between buildings, or run through electrically noisy areas — fibre covers the distance and the converter presents ordinary Ethernet at each end.

Do I need one at both ends?

Typically yes — one converter at each end of the fibre — unless the far end terminates in a switch with its own fibre (SFP) slot, which can take a module directly.

How do I choose the right fibre module?
