Grandstream F-SM1310-10KM-10G SFP+ Fiber Module

The Grandstream F-SM1310-10KM-10G is a 10 Gigabit SFP+ transceiver for single-mode fibre, running at 1310 nm over distances up to 10 km.

Single-mode is the long-distance fibre. This module is for linking buildings, campuses and sites — a run between two blocks, an office to a warehouse across a yard, a school to its sports hall. Ten kilometres is far more than most sites need, which is the point: it will not be the limiting factor.

Buy them in pairs. A fibre link needs a module at each end, and both ends must match — same fibre type, same wavelength, same speed. A single-mode module will not talk to a multi-mode one at the other end, and this is the most common way a fibre link fails to come up on the day.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need one or two?

Two — one at each end of the fibre. A link needs a transceiver in both switches. It is worth saying because ordering one is a very easy mistake and it stops the whole job.

Single-mode or multi-mode — which fibre do I have?

Single-mode fibre is usually yellow; multi-mode is usually orange or aqua. If the fibre is already installed, that is the deciding factor — the module must match the glass. If you are installing new fibre between buildings, single-mode is the sensible choice.

Will it work in a non-Grandstream switch?

Often, but some switches only accept their own vendor's coded modules. If the switch at the far end is another brand, check its compatibility list before ordering.

10 km seems like a lot — is a shorter one cheaper?

Marginally, and it is rarely worth the risk of being short. Distance figures are best-case and real runs include splices, patch panels and bends that all cost budget.
