Grandstream GXW4108 Analog FXO IP Gateway – 8 Port

The Grandstream GXW4108 is an eight-port analogue FXO gateway: it connects eight real telephone lines to a SIP platform, so an IP phone system can make and take calls on the lines a business already has.

FXO plugs into a line; FXS plugs into a phone. Get that the right way round before ordering. Keeping eight existing telephone lines while moving the handsets to IP needs FXO — this. Keeping old analogue handsets or fax machines alive on a VoIP system needs an FXS gateway instead.

This is the previous generation. The HT881 supersedes it with the same eight-port FXO function plus an FXS port, three SIP profiles, lifeline support and current provisioning. The GXW4108 still works and is often the cheaper answer for a like-for-like replacement or a straightforward eight-line job — but specify the HT881 on a new install.

Frequently asked questions

FXO or FXS — which do I need?

FXO connects to a line; FXS connects to a phone or fax. Keeping existing telephone lines on a new IP system needs FXO. Keeping old handsets or faxes working needs FXS.

Should I buy this or the HT881?

On a new installation, the HT881 — it adds an FXS port, lifeline support, three SIP profiles and current provisioning. Buy the GXW4108 to match an existing estate, or where the budget decides it.

How many ports do I need?

One per simultaneous call, not one per line you own. A business with twelve lines that never has more than five calls at once does not need twelve ports.

Will fax work through it?

It supports T.38 fax over IP. Fax over any IP network remains fussy, so test with the actual machine before committing to the design.

Does it work with a non-Grandstream PBX?

Yes. It is a standards-based SIP device and is widely deployed against third-party IP PBX platforms as well as Grandstream's own UCM range.

Is it still supported?

It is a previous-generation product still in the range. Where long-term firmware support matters, the HT881 is the safer specification.
