Grandstream HT818 Analog FXS IP Gateway- 8 Port + NAT Router

The Grandstream HT818 puts eight analogue phones or fax machines onto a VoIP system. It is the largest of the HT800 family — past this size you are into rack-mount gateway territory, so the HT818 is the biggest analogue estate you can serve from a box that sits quietly on a shelf.

Each FXS port is its own extension: plug in the analogue handset, fax machine or door phone, register the port, and the device carries on exactly as before — same dial tone, same ring — while the call travels over SIP.

Eight ports with four SIP profiles is more flexible than it sounds. The ports can be split across up to four different SIP services — a hosted platform for the phones, a separate trunk for the fax, an analytics-free line for the alarm dialler. Two Gigabit ports and a NAT router mean it sits at the network edge or on the LAN. This is the original HT818; a newer revision is listed separately as the current HT818.

Frequently asked questions

Will my existing phones just work?

Yes. An FXS port supplies line voltage, dial tone and ring current exactly like the old analogue wall socket, so the handset behaves normally. Nothing changes for the person using it.

What are the four SIP profiles for?

Splitting the ports across different services. Phones on the hosted platform, the fax on a T.38-capable trunk, the alarm on its own provider — each profile registers separately and ports are assigned to whichever suits.

Does fax actually work?

Fax is the part worth planning. T.38 relay carries the fax as data rather than as audio, which is what makes it reliable — but your provider has to support T.38 at the other end. Ask them before you port the fax number.

Eight ports or a rack gateway?

Count the analogue devices — handsets, faxes, lift phones, door panels, alarm diallers. Up to eight, this box on a shelf does it. Beyond that, the GXW4216 and its bigger siblings are the rack-mount step up.

Which HT818 listing should I buy?

They do the same job — eight analogue ports onto SIP. This is the original; the newer revision is listed separately. If you are matching an existing fleet, buy the same unit you already run; otherwise either serves.
