Grandstream GWN7602 Wireless Access Point

The Grandstream GWN7602 is a 2×2 802.11ac Wi-Fi access point with an Ethernet switch built into it. One cable arrives at the room; out of it come Wi-Fi, three wired sockets and PoE for a device beside it.

That is the entire argument for this product, and in a hotel room or a small office it is a strong one. The uplink is a Gigabit port taking PoE or PoE+ and passing power onward (PSE), so a desk phone or an IPTV box can be fed from the same plate without another adapter. It covers around 100 metres and handles up to 80 concurrent clients — sized for a room, not a floor.

Read the port speeds carefully. The three downlink ports are 100 Mb, not Gigabit. For a phone, a television or a door controller that is plenty. For a desktop computer moving large files it is not, and if that is the plan the GWN7603 or GWN7604 — with four Gigabit ports — is the model you actually want.

Frequently asked questions

Are the wired ports Gigabit?

No — the three downlink ports are 100 Mb. Only the uplink is Gigabit. That is fine for phones, televisions and small devices; for a desktop computer moving large files, choose the GWN7603 or GWN7604.

Can it power a phone?

Yes. The uplink supports PSE, so power arriving over PoE can be passed on to a device in the room. What it can pass depends on what feeds it, so use a PoE+ source if you want headroom.

How much area does one cover?

Around 100 metres in open air, which in practice means one room or a small suite. It is designed as a one-per-room unit, not a floor access point.

Is 80 clients enough?

For a room, comfortably. For an open-plan floor or a public space, use a ceiling-mounted access point instead.

Does it replace a switch in the room?

For a few small devices, yes. It is not a substitute for a proper switch in a comms cabinet, and the 100 Mb ports set the limit on what it suits.

Can it be managed with the rest of our GWN kit?
