Grandstream GWN7661 Wi-Fi 6 AX1800 In-Wall Access Point

The Grandstream GWN7661 is an in-wall Wi-Fi 6 access point rated AX1800 — 1.77 Gbps, dual-band 2×2:2 MU-MIMO with DL/UL OFDMA — that sits in a faceplate where a data socket used to be, and gives the room three wired Gigabit ports on top of the Wi-Fi.

That is the whole argument for the in-wall format. One cable reaches the room; out of it come Wi-Fi, a socket for the desk phone, a socket for the television and a socket for whatever else. In a hotel, a student flat or a serviced apartment, this replaces an access point, a small switch and the mess of both.

Height decides how well it works. A ceiling AP radiates down over a whole room; a faceplate AP radiates out from about 30 cm off the floor, through furniture. It covers a room well and a floor badly — which is fine, because covering one room properly is the job.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit my existing back box?

It is designed to replace a standard in-wall faceplate, but back box depth varies. Check the depth behind the existing plate before ordering a floor's worth — that, not the Wi-Fi, is what stalls in-wall installs.

Can it power a phone from one of its ports?

The three downlink ports provide Ethernet. Whether they also supply PoE depends on the model configuration — check before relying on it to power a handset. Where a phone must be powered locally, plan for a small PoE source or a phone with its own adapter.

How much of the building will one cover?

One room, well. A faceplate access point sits low and radiates outward through furniture, so it is not a substitute for a ceiling AP covering a floor. The design assumes one per room.

Is 1.77 Gbps enough for a hotel room?

Comfortably. That is the sum of both radios' peaks; a room's worth of phones, laptops and a streaming television uses a small fraction of it.

Does it need a controller?

No. GDMS Networking in the cloud or GWN Manager on-premise manage a corridor or a building of them centrally, both free.

How is it different from the GWN7624?

Wi-Fi generation. The GWN7661 is Wi-Fi 6 with 2×2:2 on both bands; the GWN7624 is Wi-Fi 5 Wave-2 with a 4×4:4 radio on 5 GHz. The 7661 handles modern devices more efficiently; the 7624 has more streams on 5 GHz.
