Grandstream GXW4224 V2 Analog FXS IP Gateway- 24 Port

The Grandstream GXW4224 V2 connects 24 analogue phones or fax machines to a VoIP system. It is the answer when a building is full of working analogue handsets, door phones, lift phones and fax lines that nobody wants to replace, and the phone system behind them is moving to SIP.

Each port behaves like its own extension. Plug in the analogue device, register the port to the PBX or provider, and the handset keeps working exactly as it did — same ring, same dial tone, same fax machine — while the call travels over the network.

Cabling is the practical part: 24 RJ11 jacks for one-by-one connection, plus a 50-pin Telco connector for sites already patched to a punch-down block. On a comms-room install the Telco connector saves an afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

Will my existing analogue phones just work?

Yes. An FXS port supplies line voltage, dial tone and ring current exactly as an analogue exchange line does, so the handset behaves normally. Nothing changes for the person using it.

Do fax machines actually work over this?

Fax is the part worth planning. The gateway supports T.38 fax relay, which carries the fax as data rather than trying to squeeze fax tones through a voice codec — that is what makes it reliable. Your provider or PBX also has to support T.38 at the other end.

How many ports do I actually need?

One per analogue device, not per user. Count the handsets, fax machines, lift phones, door entry panels and alarm diallers. It is common to find more analogue devices in a building than anyone expected.

What is the 50-pin Telco connector for?

Older buildings usually have their analogue cabling terminated on a punch-down block. The Telco connector lets you take all 24 ports to that block with one cable instead of running 24 RJ11 leads.

Can I split the ports across different SIP accounts?

Yes. Each port registers independently, so ports can belong to different extensions, different departments or even different providers.

16, 24, 32 or 48 ports — which?

Count the devices and leave a little headroom; the per-port cost falls as density rises, so if you are close to a boundary the larger unit is often the better buy. Two smaller gateways are also valid if the analogue cabling arrives in two places.
