The Grandstream GWN7001 is the entry point of the multi-WAN VPN router range: six Gigabit ports, up to 2.2 Gbps of throughput, a built-in firewall and VPN, and the same embedded controller as its larger siblings.

That controller is the reason this router costs what it does and still manages a network. It runs itself and up to 150 GWN access points — no separate controller appliance, no licence, no subscription. A forty-pound router managing a hundred access points is not a typo; it is how the GWN range is designed.

Multi-WAN lets you plug in two internet connections that share the load and fail over to each other. For a small business, that is the difference between a broadband fault being an inconvenience and being a closed day.

Frequently asked questions

Really 150 access points from this router?

Yes — the embedded controller is the same across the GWN700x range. What differs between the models is ports and connectivity, not the controller. That said, a network with 150 access points has other reasons to want the larger model.

Does it have PoE output?

No — that is on the GWN7002 and GWN7003. Access points connected to a GWN7001 need PoE from a switch or an injector.

What does multi-WAN actually do for me?

It lets you plug in two internet connections. Normally both carry traffic; if one fails, everything moves to the other. For a small business that is the difference between a broadband fault being an inconvenience and being a closed day.

Is the VPN licensed separately?

No. VPN, firewall, DPI and content filtering are part of the router.

Is six ports enough?

For a router, usually — one or two are WAN, the rest feed a switch. If you are plugging desks straight into the router, buy a switch instead; routers are not designed to be the wiring closet.
