Grandstream GWN7661E Wi-Fi 6 Access Point

The Grandstream GWN7661E is the AX3000 in-wall access point — the higher-specified faceplate unit in the Wi-Fi 6 range. Up to 3 Gbps of wireless throughput, 2×2:2 MU-MIMO on 2.4 GHz and 3×3:2 on 5 GHz, 256 concurrent clients, around 100 metres of coverage, and four Gigabit wireline ports.

Three of those ports face the room for IP phones, computers and televisions; the fourth is the uplink and takes PoE or PoE+. One cable arrives behind the plate and the room gets Wi-Fi and wired sockets, which is the whole reason the in-wall format exists.

The three spatial streams on 5 GHz are what you are paying for. They do not make one laptop faster — most have two streams — but they let the access point serve several devices in the same instant instead of taking turns. In a family hotel room or a shared flat, that is the difference people notice.

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from the GWN7661?

Radio class and ports. The GWN7661E is AX3000 with 3×3:2 on 5 GHz and four Gigabit ports; the GWN7661 is AX1800 with 2×2:2. Same format, same install, more capacity.

Will it fit my existing back box?

It is designed to replace a standard in-wall plate, but depth varies. Check behind one before ordering a floor's worth — back box depth, not the specification, is what stalls in-wall installs.

Do its downlink ports supply PoE?

The uplink takes PoE/PoE+ to power the unit. Do not assume the downlink ports pass power onward — if a phone at that socket must be powered locally, confirm it or plan a separate PoE source. The GWN7624 is the model in this range that explicitly supplies PoE on two of its ports.

How much area does one cover?

One room, well. A faceplate access point sits low and radiates outward through furniture, so plan one per room rather than one per corridor.

Does it need a controller?

No. There is one embedded in the access point for small deployments; larger sites use GWN Manager on-premise or GDMS Networking in the cloud, both free.

Will one client see 3 Gbps?

No. That is both radios' theoretical peaks added together, and the wired side is Gigabit anyway. The figure describes total capacity, not one connection.
