Grandstream GWN7664LR Long-Range Outdoor Wi-Fi 6 Access Point

The Grandstream GWN7664LR is the top outdoor access point in the range: Wi-Fi 6, 4×4:4 MU-MIMO with DL/UL OFDMA, up to 300 metres of coverage and 750 clients, in a weatherproof, heat-resistant casing. It is what you mount on a wall or a pole when the Wi-Fi has to reach across a yard, a car park, a campus or a field.

The numbers behind it are unusually honest for an outdoor unit: 3.55 Gbps of wireless throughput and a 2.5 Gbps wired port. That wired figure matters — a Gigabit uplink would throttle an access point this capable, which is a mistake it is easy to make when specifying the switch behind it.

There is no controller to buy. One access point takes the controller role for the site, or you run them free from GWN.Cloud or GWN Manager on your own server.

Frequently asked questions

Will it really cover 300 metres?

Outdoors with clear line of sight, roughly — and outdoors is where that figure is meaningful, because there are no walls. Trees, buildings, vehicles and weather all take their share, and the client device's own aerial usually gives up before the access point does.

Why does the 2.5 Gbps wired port matter?

Because the radio can move more than a Gigabit. Put this on a plain Gigabit switch port and you have capped it. If you are buying the switch at the same time, buy one with a multi-gig port.

Can it be used indoors?

Yes, and it is sometimes the right answer for a warehouse or a barn where the space is large and hard on equipment. For a normal office the indoor GWN7664 costs less and looks better on a ceiling.

How is it powered?

Over Ethernet, which is what makes outdoor mounting practical — one cable to the pole, no mains supply needed at the top. Check the switch's PoE budget: outdoor access points draw more than indoor ones.

GWN7664LR or GWN7660LR?

Reach and density. The 7664LR covers 300 m and 750 clients with 4×4:4; the 7660LR covers 250 m and 256 clients with 2×2:2 and carries an IP66 rating. For a busy outdoor space, the 7664LR; for a quieter one, the 7660LR costs less.

Do I need lightning protection?

For a pole or roof mount, discuss it with your installer — surge protection on the Ethernet run is normal practice for exposed outdoor equipment.
