Grandstream GWN7721 10-Port Layer 2 Lite Managed 2.5 Gigabit Switch

The Grandstream GWN7721 is a ten-port Layer 2 Lite managed switch: eight 2.5-Gigabit copper ports and two 10-Gigabit SFP+ ports, with a web interface, VLANs and the option of cloud or on-premise management.

Two 10-Gigabit uplinks on a switch this size is the detail worth noticing. It means the switch can sit at the edge of a building and hand everything back to the core on fibre with room to spare, or be stacked logically alongside others without the uplink becoming the choke point.

Layer 2 Lite is the honest middle ground. You get VLANs, port settings, statistics and a management interface — which is what most small businesses actually need — without paying for Layer 3 routing that will never be configured. If the network needs inter-VLAN routing on the switch itself, look at the GWN78xx Layer 3 range instead.

Frequently asked questions

What does Layer 2 Lite actually give me?

VLANs, port configuration, link aggregation, statistics and a management interface. What it does not give you is routing between VLANs — that stays with your router or a Layer 3 switch.

Does it supply PoE?

No. The GWN7721P is the PoE version, with up to 30 W per port and a 130 W total budget across its eight ports.

Do I need two 10G uplinks?

Not usually both — but having two lets you run a redundant path to the core, or aggregate them for 20 Gbps. Either is worth more than the modules cost.

Can I manage it without the cloud?

Yes, three ways: its own web interface, GWN Manager on your own server, or GDMS Networking in the cloud. All three are free.

Do I need 2.5G?

Only if something you own can use it — a modern access point, a NAS, a multi-gigabit adapter. On ordinary Gigabit devices it behaves like a Gigabit switch.

Are SFP+ modules included?

No. Buy them in pairs — both ends of a fibre run must be the same type and speed.
