Grandstream GWN7701M 8-Port 2.5G Unmanaged Switch with 1 SFP+

The Grandstream GWN7701M is a nine-port unmanaged switch: eight 2.5-Gigabit copper ports and one SFP+ fibre port that takes a 1-Gigabit or 10-Gigabit module, with 60 Gbps of switching capacity behind them.

It is the larger sibling of the GWN7700M, for the small install that needs more than five multi-gigabit ports — a handful of access points, a NAS, a couple of fast workstations and still room to grow — without moving up to a managed switch and the configuration that comes with one.

Every copper port here is 2.5-Gigabit, not Gigabit. That is worth saying plainly because the naming does not make it obvious. The ports auto-negotiate down, so ordinary Gigabit and 100 Mbps equipment plugs in and works — but the reason to buy this switch rather than a cheaper one is the 2.5G, and there is no point paying for it if nothing on the network can use it.

Frequently asked questions

Are the copper ports Gigabit or 2.5-Gigabit?

2.5-Gigabit, all eight of them, auto-negotiating down to 1 Gigabit and 100 Mbps. That is the whole point of the model.

Does it supply PoE?

No. Devices plugged into it need their own power. For PoE at this speed, look at the GWN7721P, which is managed and supplies power on eight ports.

Can I create VLANs?

No. It is unmanaged — no web interface, no configuration. The GWN7721 is the managed equivalent.

What goes in the SFP+ port?

A 1G or 10G module, with a matching module at the far end. Modules are not included, and both ends of a fibre run must be the same type.

Do I need 2.5G?

Only if something you own can use it. On ordinary Gigabit devices this behaves like a Gigabit switch and costs more for nothing.

Will it run warm?

Barely. Without a PoE power stage it draws very little — a 12 V 1 A adapter — which makes it a sensible choice for a cupboard with no ventilation.
