Grandstream GWN7830 12Ports Layer 3 Aggregation Managed Switch

The Grandstream GWN7830 is an enterprise Layer 3 aggregation switch built around fibre: four 10-Gigabit SFP+ ports, six Gigabit SFP ports and two Gigabit copper ports, with 96 Gbps of switching capacity and a 71.4 Mpps forwarding rate.

It is the box that sits between the access switches and the core. Each floor or building runs its uplink into one of these, and the 10-Gigabit SFP+ ports carry the aggregate onward — so a busy floor cannot slow a quiet one, and a fault can be isolated to a single link rather than a shared chain.

Budget for the optics, and read the port mix carefully. Only two of the twelve ports are copper. This is a switch for a site that already runs fibre between cabinets or buildings; if what you actually need is copper density, an access switch with SFP+ uplinks is the cheaper and more useful product. Fully populated, ten fibre ports means twenty modules across both ends of every run.

Frequently asked questions

Only two copper ports — is that a mistake?

No, it is the design. An aggregation switch connects other switches, and it does that over fibre. If you need copper ports for devices, use an access switch with SFP+ uplinks instead.

Are modules included?

No. Every link needs a module at both ends and they must match. Ten fibre ports fully populated is twenty modules across the runs — price that in from the start.

Can I use it as a core switch?

For a small or medium network, yes. With Layer 3 routing and 96 Gbps of capacity it can act as both the distribution and the core layer in most single-site buildings.

Do I need an aggregation switch at all?

If you have more than two or three access switches, almost certainly. Chaining switches to each other makes every hop a shared bottleneck and makes faults much harder to isolate.

How is it different from the GWN7832?

Port mix. The GWN7832 is twelve 10-Gigabit SFP+ ports and nothing else. The GWN7830 mixes four 10G SFP+ with six 1G SFP and two copper, which suits sites with existing Gigabit fibre.
