Grandstream GWN7816 48-Port Gigabit Layer 3 Switch with 6 SFP

The Grandstream GWN7816 is a forty-eight-port Gigabit Layer 3 managed switch with six 10-Gigabit SFP+ uplinks and no PoE stage — the switch for a rack full of equipment that already has its own power.

That describes most server rooms and most desk floors: computers, printers, servers, NVRs and links to other switches all bring their own supply. Only phones, cameras and access points need PoE. Specifying a PoE switch for forty-eight self-powered devices means paying for a power stage that will never be used and generating heat in the cabinet for nothing.

What you are paying for instead is Layer 3 and six 10G uplinks. Routing between VLANs happens in hardware on the switch rather than as a round trip to the router, and six fibre uplinks let a switch this size aggregate properly into a core with a redundant path left over.

Frequently asked questions

Does it supply PoE?

No. The GWN7816P is the PoE version. If nothing on this switch needs power over the cable, the non-PoE model is cheaper, cooler and quieter.

Do I need Layer 3 at all?

On a forty-eight-port switch, usually yes — a switch this size is normally carrying several VLANs that need to reach each other, and doing that on the switch removes a round trip through the router.

Why six SFP+ ports?

Because forty-eight Gigabit ports can generate more traffic than one or two uplinks will carry. Aggregate two to the core, keep one for a redundant path, and the rest are spare.

Are SFP+ modules included?

No. Every fibre link needs a module at both ends and they must match — buy them in pairs and price them in from the start.

Can I mix it with PoE switches on the same site?

Yes, and that is usually the sensible design: PoE switches where the phones and access points are, non-PoE where the computers are.

Is there a CLI?

Yes, as well as the web interface — which matters at this size, where configuration is usually templated rather than clicked.
