Grandstream GWN7816P 48-Port Gigabit Enterprise Layer 3 Managed PoE Network Switch

The Grandstream GWN7816P is the largest Layer 3 managed PoE switch in the GWN7810 range: forty-eight Gigabit ports, a 740 W total power budget, six 10-Gigabit SFP+ uplinks and routing in hardware.

Its power layout is the detail that matters and it is not uniform. Ports 1 to 8 supply up to 60 W each as PoE++ (802.3bt); ports 9 to 48 supply up to 30 W as PoE+. That is a deliberate design: put the PTZ cameras, the heated housings and the Wi-Fi 7 access points on the first eight ports, and everything ordinary on the rest.

Patch to that layout or you will run out of the wrong thing. A 60 W device on port 30 will not get what it needs however much budget is left, and eight high-draw devices scattered across the panel is the most common way this switch gets misconfigured. Label the first eight ports before the installers arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Which ports supply 60 W?

Ports 1 to 8 only. Ports 9 to 48 supply up to 30 W. Plan the patching around that — a 60 W device on port 30 will not work no matter how much total budget remains.

Can every port draw its maximum at once?

No. 740 W is the total. Eight ports at 60 W is already 480 W, leaving 260 W for the other forty. Add up the actual wattages.

What actually needs PoE++?

PTZ cameras, cameras with heaters or wipers, Wi-Fi 7 access points, some video door stations and large-screen intercoms. Phones and standard access points do not.

Do I need the Layer 3 features?

At forty-eight ports, usually yes — a switch this size is normally doing distribution work with several VLANs that need to reach each other.

Why six SFP+ ports?

Because a forty-eight-port switch generates enough traffic to need more than one uplink. Aggregate two, keep one redundant, and the rest are spare.

Are SFP+ modules included?

No. Buy them in pairs — both ends of a fibre run must be the same type and speed.
