Grandstream GWN7630 Dual-Band WiFi Access Point

The Grandstream GWN7630 is the workhorse 802.11ac Wave-2 access point: dual-band 4×4:4 MU-MIMO, 200+ concurrent clients and coverage up to 175 metres. It is the one to reach for when a site has more devices than a consumer router can hold and no appetite for a controller licence.

4×4:4 is the part that matters in a busy room. Four spatial streams mean the access point can talk to several clients at once rather than in turn, which is the difference between a meeting room that works and one where everyone blames the Wi-Fi.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate controller?

No. One of the access points takes the controller role for the site, or you manage them free from GWN.Cloud. There is no licence and no appliance to buy — which is usually the largest hidden cost when comparing against other brands.

Will it really cover 175 metres?

Outdoors, in clear air, roughly. Indoors expect far less — plasterboard costs a little, brick and concrete cost a lot, and steel racking or lift shafts can stop a signal dead. Plan by rooms and walls, not by square metres.

How many access points do I need?

Almost always more than the coverage figure suggests, because capacity runs out before coverage does. A room with forty people needs an AP for the forty people, not for the twenty metres.

What does 4×4:4 MU-MIMO actually do?

It lets the access point transmit to several devices at the same time instead of taking turns. In a busy room that is the single biggest difference between this and a cheaper access point.

Does it need PoE?

It is designed for it — one cable to the ceiling, no socket needed up there. If the switch has no PoE, use an injector.

GWN7630 or a Wi-Fi 6 model?

If the site is dense with modern devices, Wi-Fi 6 (GWN7660 or GWN7664) handles congestion better. If the client count is moderate and the budget matters, the GWN7630 is still a strong access point.
