Grandstream GWN7802 16-Port Gigabit Network Switch with 4 SFP

The Grandstream GWN7802 is a sixteen-port Gigabit Layer 2+ managed switch with four SFP uplink ports — the non-PoE model in the GWN7800 range, for cabinets where the devices bring their own power.

That covers more of a network than people expect. Desktop computers, printers, servers, NVRs and uplinks to other switches all have their own supplies; only phones, cameras and access points need PoE. Buying a PoE switch for a rack of self-powered equipment is money spent on a power stage that will never be used, and heat generated for nothing.

Four SFP ports is generous at this size. Use two to reach the core over fibre and keep the others for links to neighbouring cabinets — or for the runs longer than copper's 100 metres, which is usually the reason fibre appears in a building in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

Does it supply PoE?

No. The GWN7802P is the PoE version. If nothing on this switch needs power over the cable, the non-PoE model is cheaper, cooler and quieter.

What does Layer 2+ give me?

Advanced VLANs for traffic segmentation, advanced QoS for prioritising voice and video, and IGMP snooping so multicast does not flood the network. Routing between VLANs belongs to a router or a Layer 3 switch.

Are the SFP ports 1G or 10G?

This model carries four Gigabit SFP ports. For 10-Gigabit uplinks, look at the Pro or Layer 3 ranges, which use SFP+.

Are modules included?

No. Every fibre link needs a module at both ends and they must match — buy them in pairs.

Can I mix it with PoE switches on the same site?

Yes, and that is usually the sensible design: PoE switches where the phones and access points are, non-PoE where the computers are.
