The Grandstream WP822 is a cordless phone that runs on Wi-Fi rather than DECT. That single difference is the reason to choose it: there is no base station to buy, no five-handset limit, and coverage is wherever the building's Wi-Fi already reaches.

It carries 2 SIP accounts on 2 lines, 8 hours of talk time and 200 hours of standby, on integrated dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi with an advanced antenna design and roaming support — so a handset walking between access points keeps the call.

The Wi-Fi has to be good. A DECT system brings its own radio; this one borrows yours. On a well-covered site that is a saving; on a site with patchy coverage it will be blamed on the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Wi-Fi cordless or DECT?

DECT brings its own radio and works in buildings with poor Wi-Fi, but needs a base station and tops out at five handsets per base. Wi-Fi uses coverage you already have and has no handset limit, but is only as good as that coverage. If the Wi-Fi is weak in the places people walk, buy DECT.

Will calls survive walking around the building?

Yes, if the access points are configured for roaming and coverage overlaps properly. The handset supports roaming; the network has to cooperate. This is worth testing on the actual route people walk before buying a fleet.

Should the phones share the guest Wi-Fi?

No. Put them on their own SSID or VLAN so guest traffic cannot interfere with them.

WP822 or WP826?

Battery and radio. The WP826 gives 12 hours of talk time against 8, runs Wi-Fi 6 rather than Wi-Fi 5, and takes 3 SIP accounts against 2. For a full shift on the floor of a busy building, the 826 earns the difference.

How many handsets can I have?

As many as your phone system supports — there is no base station imposing a limit. The practical constraint is the access points and how many devices each one is carrying.

Is it ruggedised?

No ingress protection rating is published for it. For wet or dusty work, look at a ruggedised model instead.
