Grandstream WP856 Wi-Fi Smartphone

The Grandstream WP856 is a Wi-Fi smartphone rather than a cordless handset. It runs Android 13 with Google Mobile Services — so the Play Store and its apps are available — on a 5.5-inch touch display, with up to six SIP accounts, a built-in 1D and 2D barcode scanner, NFC and a 13 MP rear camera.

That combination is aimed at one particular problem: staff who currently carry a phone and a scanner and a tablet for the warehouse app. One rugged device replaces all three, and the calls arrive on the same SIP platform as the desk phones rather than on a separate mobile contract.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a mobile phone?

No — it works over Wi-Fi, not a cellular network, so there is no SIM and no airtime contract. Calls go through your own SIP platform, which is what makes it cheap to run and useless outside your coverage.

Can I install our warehouse app on it?

Yes. It runs Android 13 with Google Mobile Services, so Play Store apps and in-house Android apps both work. That is the main reason to choose it over a plain Wi-Fi handset.

How good is the scanner?

It reads 1D and 2D barcodes with a dedicated scanner rather than the camera, which means it is fast enough to use all day — the difference people notice within an hour of a trial.

What does IP65 cover?

Dust-tight and protected against water jets. For immersion or wash-down, the IP67-rated WP825 is the right device instead.

Will the battery last a shift?

Up to 20 hours of talk time from 5000 mAh, with fast charging. A twelve-hour shift of scanning and intermittent calls is well inside that.

Does the Wi-Fi need to be good?

Yes, and this is the thing that decides whether a rollout succeeds. A device in a moving hand needs seamless roaming between access points — survey the routes people actually walk, not just the office.
