Grandstream GWN7664E Wi-Fi 6 Indoor Access Point

The Grandstream GWN7664E is the high-performance end of the indoor Wi-Fi 6 range: AX6000, 4×4:4 MU-MIMO on both bands, up to 6 Gbps of aggregate wireless throughput, 512 concurrent clients and dual 2.5 Gigabit ports with PoE+.

What separates it from the rest of the line is that the wired side has been sized for the radio. Most access points quote multi-gigabit wireless and then hand it all to a single Gigabit port; this one has two 2.5G ports and 5 Gbps of aggregate wired throughput, so the bottleneck moves off the AP and onto whatever you plug it into.

Which means the switch matters. On a plain Gigabit switch this access point performs like a much cheaper one. Budget for 2.5G switching, or link-aggregate the two ports, or accept that you have bought headroom you cannot use yet.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need 2.5G switching to use it?

Not to make it work — the ports negotiate down to Gigabit. But the reason to buy this model over a cheaper one is the wired headroom, and on Gigabit switching you throw that away.

Will one client see 6 Gbps?

No. That is both radios' theoretical peaks added together. A two-stream laptop sees a fraction of it. The AP's real advantage is how many devices it keeps happy at once.

Is 512 clients realistic?

It is the association limit, and in a hall of phones checking email it is achievable. In a hall of laptops on video, it is not — plan by traffic, not by headcount.

What power does it need?

PoE+. Check the switch's total power budget, not just its port count — a 4×4:4 access point draws considerably more than a small one.

Can I use both ports together?

Yes, that is the point of having two — aggregate them on a switch that supports it, or use the second for a wired device beside the AP.

How is it different from the GWN7664ELR?

Environment. Same class of radio; the ELR is IP68-rated for outdoor use with a longer quoted range. This one is the indoor unit.
