Grandstream GWN7660E Wi-Fi 6 Access Point

The Grandstream GWN7660E is an enterprise indoor Wi-Fi 6 access point rated AX3000, with 2×2:2 MU-MIMO on 2.4 GHz and 3×3:2 on 5 GHz, support for up to 256 concurrent clients and a quoted coverage radius of 175 metres. It is the mid-range workhorse of the GWN indoor line — enough radio for a busy floor, without the price of a tri-band unit.

Like the rest of the range it carries an embedded controller that manages up to 50 local GWN access points, so a small or medium site needs no separate hardware controller and no subscription. If the estate outgrows that, GWN Manager on-premise or GDMS Networking in the cloud take over without replacing anything.

Two numbers on the datasheet are worth reading carefully. The 175 metres is an open-air figure — through plasterboard, glass and steel racking, plan on a fraction of it, and remember that capacity usually runs out before distance does. The 3 Gbps is the sum of both radios' theoretical peak rates; no single client sees it, and the single Gigabit uplink is the real ceiling for everything behind the AP.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need a controller?

No. The AP has an embedded controller that manages up to 50 GWN access points, so a small site needs nothing else. Larger estates can move to GWN Manager on-premise or GDMS Networking in the cloud without changing hardware.

Will one really cover 175 metres?

In open air, with line of sight. Indoors, plasterboard, glass, lift shafts and steel racking all take a bite out of it. Plan indoor coverage from a survey, not from the datasheet radius.

How many devices can it actually handle?

256 is the association limit. The practical number is lower and depends on what they are doing — a room of laptops on video calls is a very different load from a room of phones checking email. If in doubt, add an AP rather than push one to its limit.

Do I need PoE+ or is PoE enough?

It self-adapts on detection of PoE or PoE+, so either will bring it up. Check the switch's total power budget rather than its port count when you are feeding several APs from one switch.

Is the single Gigabit port a bottleneck?

It can be, on paper. In practice a Gigabit uplink is more than most floors of real clients generate. If you expect sustained multi-gigabit demand, look at the multi-gigabit Wi-Fi 7 models instead.

Can I mesh it instead of cabling?

Yes, mesh is supported — but every mesh hop costs throughput, because the AP is using the same radio to serve clients and to reach its parent. Cable where you can, mesh where you cannot.
