Grandstream GWN7660ELR Wi-Fi 6 Long-Range Access Point

The Grandstream GWN7660ELR is an outdoor long-range Wi-Fi 6 access point: AX3000, dual-band 2×2:2 MIMO with OFDMA, up to 256 clients and a quoted 300-metre coverage range, in an IP68 weatherproof and dust-proof body rated from −30 to 60°C.

It is the unit for covering ground rather than filling a room — a yard, a car park, a campus walkway, a caravan site, a marina. The long-range antenna design trades the wide spread of an indoor AP for reach in a chosen direction, which is exactly the wrong choice indoors and exactly the right one outside.

The connectivity is unusually good for this class. Alongside the Gigabit Ethernet port with PoE/PoE+ there is a 2.5 Gigabit SFP port — so where the run is too long for copper, fibre can go straight into the access point without a media converter in a box on a pole.

Frequently asked questions

Will it really reach 300 metres?

Outdoors, with line of sight and nothing in the way, that is the quoted figure. Trees, buildings and vehicles all take a bite out of it, and the client's own transmitter has to be able to answer from that distance — a phone in a pocket is not a match for a pole-mounted antenna.

Can I use it indoors?

You can, but it is the wrong tool. Long-range antennas throw signal outward rather than spreading it evenly, so indoors you get reach in one direction and gaps elsewhere. Use an indoor AP inside.

What is the SFP port for?

Fibre. Copper Ethernet runs out at 100 metres; if the access point is further than that from the cabinet, a fibre run into the 2.5G SFP port solves it without a converter box on the pole.

Does it need a special power supply?

PoE or PoE+ over the Ethernet port is the usual approach, which also means one cable up the pole rather than two. Note that if you use the SFP port for data, the AP still needs power from somewhere.

How is it different from the GWN7664ELR?

Capacity. Same 300-metre range and IP68 rating; the 7664ELR has a 4×4:4 radio, 512 clients and up to 6 Gbps. This one is 2×2:2, 256 clients and AX3000 — plenty for most outdoor areas and cheaper.

Will it survive a British winter?

It is rated IP68 and from −30 to 60°C, so weather is not the concern. Mounting is — fix it to something that will not move in wind, and dress the cable so water runs away from the gland, not into it.
