The Grandstream GWN7630LR is an outdoor long-range Wi-Fi 5 access point with a dual-band 4×4:4 MU-MIMO radio, 2.33 Gbps of aggregate wireless throughput, support for 200 or more concurrent clients and a quoted 300-metre coverage range, in a weatherproof, heat-resistant housing.

Four spatial streams on an outdoor unit is unusual and it is the reason to choose this one. Long range and high capacity normally pull in opposite directions; here you get both, which suits a yard full of handheld scanners or a campus quad at lunchtime rather than an empty car park that just needs a signal.

Heat resistance is not a throwaway line. An access point on a south-facing wall in July sits well above air temperature, and cheap outdoor units throttle or fail there long before the rain gets them. That, more than the IP rating, is what separates outdoor kit that lasts from outdoor kit that does not.

Frequently asked questions

Will it really reach 300 metres?

Outdoors, with line of sight and nothing in the way. Trees, vehicles and buildings all reduce it, and the client has to answer from that distance too — a phone in a pocket has a far weaker transmitter than a pole-mounted access point.

Can I use it indoors?

You can, but it is the wrong tool. Long-range antennas throw signal outward rather than spreading it evenly, so indoors you get reach in one direction and gaps elsewhere.

What does 4×4:4 buy me outdoors?

Simultaneous service. With four streams the access point talks to several clients in the same slot rather than cycling through them — which is what a yard full of scanners actually needs.

Is Wi-Fi 5 still worth buying for outdoors?

Often, yes. Outdoor coverage is limited by distance and obstruction long before it is limited by the standard, and handheld scanners and phones are rarely Wi-Fi 6 anyway. Move up if the estate is standardising on Wi-Fi 6.

How is it powered?

PoE over the Ethernet run, which keeps it to one cable up the pole. Check the injector or switch budget rather than assuming any PoE port will do — a 4×4:4 outdoor unit is not a low-draw device.

Will it survive full sun?

It is specifically built with heat-resistant construction for that reason. Still mount it sensibly — and dress the cable so water runs away from the gland, not into it.
