Grandstream GWN7662 Indoor Wi-Fi-6 Access Point

The Grandstream GWN7662 is an indoor 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 access point built for density: a 4×4:4 MU-MIMO radio on 5 GHz, 2×2:2 on 2.4 GHz, up to 5.38 Gbps of aggregate wireless throughput, 256 concurrent clients and a quoted 175 metres of coverage.

The four spatial streams on 5 GHz are the point of this model. They do not make one laptop four times faster — most laptops only have two streams anyway — but they let the access point serve several clients at once instead of taking turns. In a room full of devices, that is what people actually feel.

It carries a controller inside it. A small site can run its whole Wi-Fi from this AP's own web interface, with no separate hardware and no licence. When the estate grows past that, GWN Manager on-premise or GDMS Networking in the cloud take over without replacing anything.

Frequently asked questions

Will one client get 5.38 Gbps?

No. That figure is both radios' theoretical peaks added together. A two-stream laptop on 5 GHz sees a fraction of it. The number that matters in practice is how many devices the AP can keep happy at once, and there it is genuinely strong.

What does 4×4:4 buy me?

Simultaneous service. With four streams the AP can talk to several clients in the same slot rather than cycling through them. It is a capacity feature, not a single-device speed feature.

Will one cover 175 metres?

In open air. Indoors, expect far less — and note that on a busy floor capacity runs out long before distance does. Plan from a survey, not from the radius.

Does it need a controller?

No. There is one embedded in the access point for small deployments. Larger sites move to GWN Manager on-premise or GDMS Networking in the cloud, both free.

PoE or PoE+?

It accepts either. Check the switch's total power budget as well as its port count when several APs share one switch — that is the limit people hit, not the number of ports.

How is it different from the GWN7664?

Band layout. The GWN7664 runs 4×4:4 on both bands; the GWN7662 runs 4×4:4 on 5 GHz and 2×2:2 on 2.4 GHz. If most of your traffic is already on 5 GHz — as it usually is — the difference is small and the GWN7662 is the cheaper answer.
